What was I thinking?! When I changed careers to take control of my life, I did it all by myself. I did not seek the advice of experts who could have helped me. I had no coaches or mentors to show me an easier way to step into the life of my dreams. And, I did not have a clue how I was going to succeed. I simply relied on my tenacity and belief in myself, my ability, and my passion. Can you guess what happened?

2-women-at-coffeeI eventually succeeded, but it took a LOT of money and years of time. EXPERIENCE is the most expensive training you can buy! My father used to quote the old sage Mulla Nsrudin (1208) by saying, “Good judgment comes from experience and experience comes from bad judgment.”

So, why DIDN’T I hire someone who had been down the exact road I wanted to travel? Why didn’t I hire someone who could help me along, show me what to avoid, where to go, and how to get there? Was it arrogance? Was I overly confident? NO! Not at all! The simple answer is this: I didn’t know how much I didn’t know! I know that sounds silly…but it’s the truth.

If I had even a clue of what was in store for me, I would have enlisted the help of an expert; I would have hired a professional speaker and author who was already making their living as such. I could have saved myself years of time and tons of money by following in THEIR footsteps. After all, as successful experts, they had already done everything I wanted to do; they knew the way! I just didn’t know that the road before me would be as challenging as it ultimately turned out to be.

If we were walking along a beach, how hard would it be for you to follow me? All you would have to do would be to put your feet into my footprints, stepping left, then right, following along where I had already stepped; pretty easy, right? That’s what having a coach or a mentor is like. Why forge a new path when you can easily follow someone who has already done what want to do, gone where you want to go, made the contacts you want to make, experienced the ups and downs, and who can save you the hardest steps along the way? Why would anyone choose to do this by themselves when help is just a phone call or e-mail away?

I walked away from a six-figure advertising sales job to become an author and a speaker. Then, I launched another business…and another. Over the years, I’ve spent hundreds of thousands of dollars, asking advice from other people whom I thought knew the answers to my questions. I did what they told me I had to do to get where I wanted to go. This was a mistake that cost me not just money, but years of time. I could have achieved my goals years earlier – and that is probably the hardest part to accept!
